Applying Antiracism Approaches to Social Science Inquiry: Methodological Considerations

Case Study Activity

Case Study Activity Instructions:

Individual Review: Take a couple minutes to review the case scenario and discussion questions independently.

Small Group Discussion: Come up with responses to the questions with your breakout room group. Consider how your group could apply what you learned from the Module 3 lecture to your responses.

Large Group Debrief: Please select someone to report out your group’s responses in the main room.

Case Study:

Congratulations!

You were recently awarded a grant in partnership with a Black women-led domestic violence coalition to study the impact of racism on gender-based violence outcomes for Black women and girls  living in Chicago.

The study is intended to inform place-based, race-conscious solutions to racial and gender-based violence prevention.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Conceptualize: What theories or frameworks would you use to support your conceptualization of race, racism, and racial health inequities in gender-based violence outcomes?

  2. Operationalize: What level(s) of racism would you focus on? How would you measure the impact of racism on Black women and girl’s health outcomes?

  3. Collect and Analyze: What qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methodologies would you use to collect and analyze data in your study?

  4. Contextualize and Report: What role does context (e.g., temporal,  geographic, social, cultural, political) play in your study? How would you incorporate context in your final study report?
